News Multi-Cloud Azure AWS

Azure follows Google in joining AWS multicloud initiative

The multicloud connection developed by AWS and Google will see Microsoft Azure join as a connected cloud provider in 2026.

In its latest announcement of AWS Interconnect, Amazon Web Services mentions Microsoft's cloud offering, Azure.

This marks an important step for organisations running workloads across multiple cloud environments.

What is AWS Interconnect?

AWS Interconnect will be a multicloud networking service that offers simple, resilient, high‑speed private connections to other cloud service providers (CSPs). It’s promised to enable secure, dedicated links between AWS networking services such as Transit Gateway, Cloud WAN, and Amazon VPC, making cross-cloud deployments faster and easier than previous DIY approaches.

This new standard for multi-cloud connections is now launching as a preview, with Google Cloud as the initial launch partner, followed by Microsoft Azure next year. When exactly, and which cloud services of Microsoft Azure will connect, remains to be seen.

Currently, the AWS Interconnect service is available in five AWS regions aligned with Google Cloud locations.

  • US East (Virginia): AWS us-east-1 / Google us-east4
  • US West (California): AWS us-west-1 / Google us-west2
  • US West (Oregon): AWS us-west-2 / Google us-west1
  • Europe (London): AWS eu-west-2 / Google europe-west2
  • Europe (Frankfurt): AWS eu-central-1 / Google europe-west3

Why now?

The initiative is driven by growing demand for reliable connectivity. Not so surprisingly, the announcement came shortly after an Amazon Web Services outage on October 20, disrupting thousands of websites worldwide. Recent outages showed how dependent many services are on only a handful of major cloud infrastructure providers. All it takes is one bug or misconfiguration to cause major global outages. When a provider fails, everyday services can go offline for hours, affecting everything from gaming platforms to business-critical apps. Private, managed multicloud connectivity offered by AWS Interconnect aims to reduce these single‑provider failure risks.

Expanding multi-cloud adoption

European users are also in scope for this new multicloud option, which AWS and Google provide. Salesforce has joined too, integrating its Data 360 service for business users.

AWS and Google present Interconnect not merely as a multicloud solution but as “a step toward a more open cloud environment.”

The API specification is open and available on Microsoft’s GitHub platform, encouraging wider adoption and interoperability across providers.
